Forte Marghera

Venice - 30100 - Mestre

This is the oldest and most majestic of the forts in the Campo Trincerato. The Austrians began building it during the period of their first rule over Venice in the early nineteenth century and it was completed by the French. It is the first example of a fortification built to defend Venice and its arsenal against attacks by land. It occupies an area of about thirty hectares and is today provisionally in the charge of the Municipality of Venice which uses it for educational purposes and for summer events, until the day comes when it can have full ownership and launch an organic recovery activity which contemplates the realisation of a Museum of Venetian Fortifications and the installation of economic activities linked with the use of the territory for tourism. Thanks to its natural and historic position in the centre of gravity of the mainland fortified system, Forte Marghera is the natural place of convergence and departure of historic and nature itineraries throughout the Mestre hinterland and the whole of the Venetian lagoon.
