With its 22 000 inhabitants, Bastia Umbra - in the province of Perugia - stands less than five kilometers from Assisi. The town has ancient origins, dating back to the Roman era. The small town has assumed national importance in 1978, when the fairgrounds UmbriaFiere opened, boasting some 14 thousand square meters of exhibition and conference spaces.

Bastia Umbra is not exactly a tourist resort, but enjoys many points of historical interest, such as the Rocca Baglionesca with the church of Sant'Angelo, located in Piazza Umberto I. Very famous are some events that take place here, as the Palio di San Michele, in September, when the city districts compete with games and parades, and the Rinchinata, at Easter, a good omen for agricultural crops.

How to reach Bastia Umbra

Bastia Umbra is reachable by car from Perugia, driving on the State Road SS 147: from the A1 motorway you can exit at Bettolle or Valdichiana, then take the connection Perugia-Assisi and exit at Bastia Umbra. Those arriving from the A14 motorway Adriatica, may take the exit Fano and then drive on the state road Flaminia. By train, you can reach the town via the Florence-Rome railway line, with a connection at Terontola and the Rome-Ancona line, connection at Foligno towards Perugia-Assisi. Bastia Umbra is just 5 km away from Perugia Sant'Egidio International Airport to which it is connected via shuttle buses leaving from Piazza Italia and the square before the train station. UmbriaFiere can be reached by bus from both Perugia and Assisi.

After the inauguration of the exhibition center UmbriaFiere, the hotel supply in the area of Bastia Umbra has significantly increased: many old houses and farms have been extensively renovated to accommodate a business clientele. Several hotels in Bastia Umbra are located in the centre, such as the 4-star Hotel de la Ville or the 3-star Hotel Le Muse. On the outskirts of the town, near the exhibition center and the SS75, there are many business hotel, but those who must reach the fair may also find comfortable accommodation in Assisi, a 15-minute bus ride from Bastia Umbra, or at a B&B in Spello and Perugia, less than 15 km away.

Umbra Despite its small size, Bastia Umbra is an excellent place for shopping. Some 50 of the main shops are gathered in the Bastia Umbra City Mall and are identifiable by a mark, Bastia Shopping Store, displayed on their windows, in order to guarantee the quality of products sold. The consortium also promotes cultural and recreational activities with the aim of keeping alive the town’s business. The main shopping streets of Bastia Umbra are in the area between Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini and Piazza Cavour.
