Exhibitions and Fairs in Erfurt
Erfurt, Thuringia's capital, has always been an important industrial center, although in recent decades has undergone a rapid development of the service sector. Erfurt Fair, Messe Erfurt, located in Gothaer Strasse - in the west of the city, is the second major trade center in eastern Germany after Leipzig. The area of the fairgrounds is used also for large public events.
How to reach Erfurt and Messe Erfurt
Erfurt international airport, in the hamlet of Bindersleben, connects the city to other destinations in Germany and several locations in the Mediterranean. Erfurt airport is very close to the exhibition and conference center, which is reachable by shuttle bus or taxi in ten minutes. From the Central Station, trains depart towards Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Dresden, Düsseldorf, and in the near future also Nuremberg and Berlin. Messe Erfurt can be reached from the station via tram line n. 2; by car, drive on Motorways A4 and A71 and exit at “Messe.”
Where to sleep in Erfurt
In the Alstadt, the old town, fortunately not badly damaged during World War II, you will find most of Erfurt’s hotels. Along the main arteries leading to the periphery, such as Krammpferstrasse and Weitergasse, several business hotels are available: peak periods for Erfurt’s hotels are during major trade fairs and in mid-June, when the Krämerbrücke Festival is held, an event dedicated to food & wine and traditional arts and crafts.
Hot spots in Erfurt for the after-show
Erfurt, with its almost completely pedestrian town centre, is the main shopping center of Thuringia. Along the banks of River Gera, which crosses the centre, there are shops, bars and excellent restaurants. Several shops are located in the Lange Brücke, but the main shopping street in Erfurt is the long Marktstrasse, which from Domplatz leads to Michaelistrasse. On the opposite bank of the Gera, several clubs and restaurants are found on Schlösserstrasse, and a little further north on the Wenigemarkt.
