Udine, 100 000 inhabitants, has become an important commercial point of reference throughout the region Friuli Venezia Giulia over the last 20 years. Udine exhibition center is the icon of the shift of local economy towards the services sector, after the decline of steel and food industries.

Today, the economy of the city is represented by small and medium enterprises concentrated in the Ziu zone, Industrial Zone of Udine, in the south of the city. Udine Exhibition Center and Gorizia Fair form together the trade center Udine e Gorizia Fiere.

How to reach Udine

Udine is crossed by the motorway A23, the Italian section of the European road network E55. To the south, in Palmanova, the A23 crosses the A4 Turin-Trieste, while to the north it runs towards the border with Austria, Tarvisio pass. Udine train station, in Viale Europa Unita, is the terminus of several railway lines: to Venice and Trieste, to the Tarvisio, towards Cividale and Cervignano. The nearest airport is that of Gorizia, the Ronchi dei Legionari. Udine Fair is reachable by car from the A23 motorway, exit Udine Sud, and via bus line n.9 which makes a stop at the train station.

Udine is a historic city, rich in monuments, such as the Loggia del Lionello in Piazza Libertà, the loggia of St. John - with the magnificent clock tower inspired by Venice's Piazza San Marco, the castle date back to the 1000 AD, perched upon a hill in the city centre. All this, together with the great cultural activities, leads more than 320 000 people to the city's hotels every year. 3 and 4 star hotels in Udine are located in the centre and near the train station, in the south of the city, a few hundred meters from the Duomo in the Piazza Gabriele d'Annunzio.

In recent years, in Udine and around its hinterland municipalities, large shopping centers have sprung up with hundreds of shops. Very popular in the province are also the many outlets available, such as those in Palmanova, San Giorgio di Nogaro. In the city centre, several stylish boutiques are found in via Mercatovecchio, while in piazza San Giacomo, also known as Piazza delle Erbe, a lively market is held since 1800. Excellent shops are also available in Via Vittorio Veneto and Via Cavour: don't miss the historic caffè Contarena in the Palace of the Municipal Offices.

Hot spots in Udine for the after-show

The historical centre of Udine is walkable on foot or by bicycle (thanks to the bikesharing Udinebike service). Throughout the central area of the city, there are restaurants and pubs open in the evening, always crowded with university students and tourists. The most popular include Krepapelle, in via Tavagnacco - with music mixed by great Djs, the old apothecary now become Pei Sani wine bar, in via Poscolle, the disco Insonia Disco in via Tavagnacco - with its pistes of Latin American and hip-hop music, Al Vapore in Vicolo Zilio, popular with 30-40 year old people. Young locals also spend their evenings at the bars and discos in Lignano Sabbiadoro.
